How Is Fuel Consumption Calculated?

Fuel consumption measures how much fuel your vehicle uses over a given distance. In Europe, it is expressed as L/100km (lower is better). In the US, it is expressed as MPG (miles per gallon โ€” higher is better).

The most reliable method is the "tank-to-tank" method: fill up, reset your odometer, drive, then fill up again. The amount of fuel you added and the distance driven give you your real consumption.

Formula

L/100km = (Fuel Used in Liters / Distance in km) x 100

MPG = Distance in Miles / Fuel Used in Gallons

For example, if you used 12 gallons over 360 miles: 360 / 12 = 30 MPG, which is approximately 7.8 L/100km.

Fuel Saving Tips

  • Avoid aggressive acceleration and hard braking. Smooth driving can save 15-20% on fuel.
  • Check tire pressure regularly. Low pressure increases consumption by 3-5%.
  • Remove unnecessary weight. Every extra 100 lbs adds about 1-2% to fuel consumption.
  • Drive at economic speeds. 50-65 mph is the most efficient range; above 75 mph consumption rises sharply.
  • Use A/C wisely. Air conditioning can increase consumption by 5-15%.
  • Keep up with maintenance. Clean air filters and proper engine oil keep your engine efficient.
